Purpose and Scope of Job:
The Applications Engineer I - Electrical is an entry-level role focused on developing technical proficiency in SMA’s GM-related electrical products, including controls, drives, electrical accessories, IIoT, condition monitoring, and SMART product initiatives. This position also builds a working knowledge of related mechanical products to assist with entry-level troubleshooting. Under guidance from experienced engineers and in collaboration with the mechanical product specialist, this role supports customer technical requests and helps provide comprehensive application solutions.
Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned):
- Develop technical knowledge of GM-supported electrical products, including controls, drives, electrical accessories, IIoT, condition monitoring, and SMART product initiatives.
- Assist with customer technical support for electrical product selection, application review, troubleshooting, commissioning support, and field issue resolution under guidance from experienced engineering resources.
- Build a working knowledge of SMA mechanical products and perform entry-level mechanical troubleshooting to help determine whether customer issues are electrical, mechanical, or application-related.
- Collaborate with the mechanical product specialist and senior applications engineers to support complete technical solutions that address both electrical and mechanical aspects of the customer application.
- Learn and apply standard troubleshooting methods, internal procedures, product selection practices, and documentation requirements used by the Applications Engineering team.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of training materials, reference tools, and technical documentation for internal customers related to electrical products and basic cross-discipline troubleshooting.
- Support efforts to confirm compliance with applicable governing bodies and global efficiency standards related to supported electrical products.
- Assist with drive commissioning activities and customer controls applications with appropriate supervision and technical review.
- Support implementation and practical use of EPLAN and related electrical design tools within the GM engineering and design skill set.
- Participate in field investigations with Applications Engineering and other technical resources to evaluate customer concerns, document findings, and assist with corrective action recommendations.
- Develop proficiency toward future advancement within the Applications Engineering career path.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience, preferably with an electrical, controls, mechatronics, or related technical focus.
- Foundational knowledge of electrical products, motors, controls, drives, electrical schematics, and troubleshooting concepts used in industrial power transmission applications.
- Basic understanding of mechanical power transmission products, or demonstrated ability to learn entry-level mechanical application troubleshooting with guidance.
- Ability to learn technical product details, apply standard procedures, ask appropriate questions, and escalate complex issues when additional support is required.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical information clearly to customers, sales, service, and internal engineering teams.
- Working knowledge of Inventor, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, and Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
